Here's a guide to reading a tape measure:
The Basics: A tape measure is a flexible ruler used for measuring distances. Most tape measures show both inches and feet (on one side) and centimeters and millimeters (on the other side).
Understanding Inches:
Reading Fractions: When reading a measurement, identify the last whole inch and then count the number of fractional lines past that mark. For example, if a mark falls three 1/8 inch lines past the 5-inch mark, the measurement is 5 and 3/8 inches (5 3/8"). Reducing fractions to their simplest form is important (e.g., 2/4" becomes 1/2").
Feet and Inches: On most tape measures, the foot marks are clearly indicated, often with a different color or a larger number. After 12 inches, the numbering usually starts back at 1 inch. Be careful to note whether you are dealing with inches or feet when measuring lengths greater than 12 inches. Sometimes you will see markings like 1' 2" which signifies 1 foot 2 inches, or 14 inches.
Metric System: The other side of the tape measure will show centimeters (cm) and millimeters (mm). Each centimeter is divided into 10 millimeters. Reading the metric side is generally simpler as it uses decimal divisions.
Hook on the End: The metal hook at the end of the tape measure is designed to move slightly. This movement accounts for the thickness of the hook itself. When measuring an inside dimension (pushing the tape into a corner), the hook compresses. When measuring an outside dimension (hooking the tape over an edge), the hook extends. This ensures an accurate measurement regardless of how you're using the tape.
Tape Measure Body: The body of some tape measures may be marked with its length. This can be helpful when measuring an inside space where you can't directly read the tape measure. You can extend the tape to the other side of the space, read the number at the edge, and add the length of the tape measure body.
